Tachycardia that originates above the ventricles is called supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). \u00a0As a result, the heart may beat inefficiently, and the body may receive an inadequate blood supply.<\/p>\n<h3>If the heart rate is too fast for the condition of the patient and the heart, the result is usually:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Decrease in cardiac output<\/li>\n<li>Poor perfusion of oxygenated blood<\/li>\n<li>Decrease in blood pressure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-409\" src=\"https:\/\/www.proacls.com\/wiki\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/tachycardia-ecg.jpg\" alt=\"Tachycardia ECG\" width=\"1500\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>An ECG for a narrow complex sinus tachycardia will show the following:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Rhythm is regular<\/li>\n<li>Rate is greater than 100 beats per minute<\/li>\n<li>P waves are present and upright<\/li>\n<li>PR interval is .12 &#8211; .20 seconds<\/li>\n<li>The QRS complex is .06 -.11<\/li>\n<li>P wave to QRS ratio is 1:1<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Significance:<\/h2>\n<h3>The leading causes of most tachycardias are:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Heart disease<\/li>\n<li>Electrolyte imbalance<\/li>\n<li>Medications<\/li>\n<li>Hypoxemia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If the patient is unstable, rapid treatment must be given to correct the cause of the tachycardia. \u00a0Narrow complex tachycardias are less likely to cause life-threatening hemodynamic instability.
