The parasympathetic nervous system is often conversationally described as the &#8220;Rest and Digest&#8221; portion of the autonomic nervous system. \u00a0Atropine blocks this action.<\/p>\n<h2>Atropine Indications for Use:<\/h2>\n<p>Atropine is one of the few ACLS medications that can be delivered via endotracheal tube. However, vascular access is preferable in most cases.<\/p>\n<p>Atropine is the drug of choice for symptomatic sinus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.proacls.com\/wiki\/ekg-rhythms\/bradycardia-ecg-ekg\/\">bradycardia<\/a>. It may also be beneficial in the presence of atrioventricular nodal blocks.<\/p>\n<h2>Atropine Precautions &amp; Contraindications:<\/h2>\n<p>Atropine use during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.proacls.com\/wiki\/ekg-rhythms\/pulseless-electrical-activity-ecg-ekg\/\">pulseless electrical activity (PEA)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.proacls.com\/wiki\/ekg-rhythms\/asystole-ecg-ekg\/\">asystole<\/a> does not usually have a therapeutic benefit.<\/p>\n<p>Atropine will most likely not affect:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Type 2 second-degree or third degree AV block<\/li>\n<li>Block in non-nodal tissue<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Adult Dosage for Atropine:<\/h2>\n<p>Atropine can be given for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.proacls.com\/wiki\/ekg-rhythms\/bradycardia-ecg-ekg\/\">bradycardia<\/a>, with or without <a href=\"https:\/\/www.proacls.com\/wiki\/acls-algorithms\/acute-coronary-syndrome\/\">acute coronary syndrome<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Give 0.5 mg every 3-5 minutes as needed<\/li>\n<li>Do not exceed a total dose of .04 mg\/kg to a total of 3mg<\/li>\n<li>In severe clinical conditions, higher doses should be used with a shorter dosing interval such as every 3 minutes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To reverse the symptoms of organophosphate poisoning:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2 to 4 mg or higher may be needed<\/li>\n<li>Both intraosseous administration and intravenous infusion are effective for rapid delivery of atropine<\/li>\n<li>Reconstitution of powdered atropine can be a viable option, especially in a mass casualty setting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Personal protective equipment should be utilized while treating patients of OP toxicity to reduce the risk of cross contamination of rescuers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Effects of Atropine Sulfate: Atropine: Anticholinergic or anti-parasympathetic Sometimes referred to as a parasympatholytic drug A parasympatholytic agent is a substance or activity that reduces the parasympathetic nervous system\u2019s activity.
