Bradycardia is a slow heart rate less than 60 beats per minute. It can be a normal and a benign condition for someone who is athletic and exercises regularly. It can also be a serious problem for others when caused by structural heart disease, damage to the electrical conduction system usually related to a past heart attack, hypoxia, metabolic dysfunction and certain medications. It is important to get a thorough patient history including medication list and any other past medical problems. If the patient is showing symptoms related to the bradycardia, we will want to treat the patient and begin asking ourselves what the underlying cause may be, and if it’s reversible.
